New Travel Rules in 2025: What You Need to Know

Planning a trip abroad in 2025? Get ready for some new travel rules. Here’s a detailed explanation of the important changes:

Europe

ETIAS

The European Union is launching a new system called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) . ETIAS is a travel authorization for people from about 60 countries who don’t need a visa to visit Europe. This includes the US, Canada, and Australia .

Why is ETIAS needed?

ETIAS will help the EU identify any security, migration, or health risks . It’s similar to systems in the US, Canada, and Australia .

How do I apply?

You’ll need to apply online through the official ETIAS website (europa.eu/etias) or the ETIAS mobile app . The application will ask for your personal information, passport details, and some background questions .

How much does it cost?

The application fee is €7. However, people under 18 or over 70 don’t have to pay .

How long is it valid?

Once approved, your ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first . It allows you to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period .

Important notes:

  • Having an ETIAS doesn’t automatically mean you can enter a Schengen country. Border guards will still check if you meet their entry rules .
  • If your ETIAS application is refused, you’ll get an email explaining why and how to appeal .
  • Double-check that all the information on your ETIAS is correct, as mistakes could cause problems at the border.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

In addition to ETIAS, the EU is also putting in place the Entry/Exit System (EES) . This system will digitally record when you enter and leave the Schengen Area . Instead of stamping your passport, the EES will use automated kiosks to collect your fingerprints, photo, and travel document information .

What does this mean for travelers?

  • Faster border checks (eventually): The EES aims to speed up border checks in the long run, but there may be longer wait times at first.
  • Automated tracking: The EES will automatically keep track of how long you stay in the Schengen Area.
  • No more passport stamps: Manual passport stamping will be replaced with a digital record.

Schengen Area Expansion

Romania and Bulgaria officially became part of the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025 . This means there are no more border checks when traveling between these two countries and other Schengen countries .

What does this mean for travelers?

  • Easier travel: You can now travel freely between Romania, Bulgaria, and other Schengen countries without border controls .
  • More travel options: This expansion gives you more flexibility to explore different places within the Schengen Area.

Schengen Visa Extension

It’s generally not possible to extend a Schengen visa while you’re traveling . However, you might be able to get an extension in special situations, such as:

  • Force majeure: If something unexpected happens that prevents you from going back to your home country, like a natural disaster or political unrest.
  • Humanitarian reasons: If you have a personal emergency, like a serious medical condition .

To apply for an extension, you must meet certain conditions, including having stayed less than 90 days in the Schengen Area within the last 180 days and not having overstayed your visa . You’ll need to apply to the authorities in the Schengen country where you are staying before your visa expires.

Insurance

If you need a Schengen visa, you must have travel insurance that covers at least €30,000 (approximately $33,000) for medical expenses . This insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries and cover your entire trip . It should also include coverage for medical repatriation (transporting you back home for medical reasons), emergency medical care, and hospitalization .

Even if you don’t need a visa to enter the Schengen Area, travel insurance is still a good idea . It can protect you financially if you have unexpected medical bills, need to cancel your trip, or experience other travel problems.

United Kingdom

ETA

The UK has a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system . If you’re from a visa-exempt country, you’ll need an ETA to visit or travel through the UK, including Northern Ireland .

How do I apply?

You can apply online through the UK government website (gov.uk) or by using the “UK ETA app” available on Google Play and Apple App Store .

How much does it cost?

The ETA costs £10 .

How long is it valid?

It allows multiple trips to the UK for up to six months at a time over two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Important notes:

  • Apply in advance: Although most applications are processed quickly, it’s best to apply a few days before your trip.
  • Layovers count: You’ll need an ETA even if you’re just transiting through a UK airport.

Insurance

While travel insurance is not a legal requirement for most visitors to the UK, it’s still a good idea . The UK has a public healthcare system (the NHS), but visitors may have to pay for some services . If you’re from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Switzerland, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for medically necessary healthcare . However, these cards don’t cover all medical expenses, so it’s still wise to have travel insurance .

Thailand

Thailand is introducing a new ETA system in December 2024 . From June 2025, travelers from 93 visa-exempt countries will need an ETA to enter Thailand .

Who needs it?

If you’re from a visa-exempt country and plan to visit Thailand, you’ll need an ETA .

How do I apply?

You can apply online through the Thai e-Visa Portal (www.thaievisa.go.th) .

How much does it cost?

Registration for the ETA will be free of charge.

How long is it valid?

The ETA allows a single entry for up to 60 days, with a possible 30-day extension.

Important notes:

  • Apply in advance: It’s best to apply for your ETA before your trip, as you may need to show proof of registration to your airline .
  • Required documents: You’ll need a valid passport, flight itinerary, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds .

United States

REAL ID Act

Starting May 7, 2025, everyone 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the US . REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper top portion.

What if I don’t have a REAL ID?

You can use other forms of ID, such as a US passport, US passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), US Department of Defense ID, state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License, or Permanent resident card.

Why is REAL ID required?

The REAL ID Act aims to improve security standards for driver’s licenses and ID cards.

Asia

Many Asian countries are making it easier to get visas with new or improved e-Visa systems . This includes Thailand, Kuwait, Belarus, and the Democratic Republic of Congo .

Australia

Australia has strict rules about who can enter the country. You’ll need a valid passport and a visa . When you arrive in Perth, you’ll also need to fill out an Incoming Passenger card, which includes health and character declarations.

Remember to check the latest travel advice before your trip, as rules can change. Safe travels!
